Artist Bio

Candy Apple Blue is an American two-piece Synth-Pop band consisting of sibling songwriting and music production team Carly and Hoyt Emerick.

The musical duo has made waves in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania indie music scene with their local hit songs and YouTube music videos. They often feature outside vocal talent on their releases (e.g. Alaska Thunderfuck, Nick Bramlett, Apollo Rogers, Daveo Falaveo, Espen Kraft, Christina Siravo, Barry Brayleo) and draw inspiration from the 1980s. Most recently, they worked with producers Juno Dreams and Matt Pop on their fourth full-length studio album, Second Sight. The band is currently working hard on new music for their forthcoming album, Breakthrough.

Challenges

“We’ve faced some of the same challenges as our fellow musical peers. Mainly, that’s just getting our music heard. Being in an indie band and getting your music out there is no easy task. Especially when you don’t have a major label behind you with really deep pockets to move things forward. On our own, we’ve been lucky enough to have our music placed in films, played on college radio, and have had our music used in a notable YouTube technology channel called Techmoan. We take pride in being a DIY indie band. However, we often have to wear so many different hats to get things done and that can be exhausting. Ultimately, the time and effort that we put into our band project is artistically rewarding.”

Future Goals

“We have been working hard on composing new music for our forthcoming album titled, Breakthrough! It’s our hope that it will be just that, a breakthrough.”

Upcoming Singles/Projects/Videos

“We hope to have our latest offering ‘I Wanna Party (ft. Nick Bramlett)’ out in October. We always try to release our songs with an accompanying music video. This year has been especially challenging for us. For a variety of personal reasons, we’ve only been able to release two new singles this year. Both new songs ‘A Touch Too Much’ and ‘Special Star’ have done quite well for us. For that, we are very grateful.”

Can you pick one of your tracks and tell us the story behind it? What inspired you to create it, and what emotions were you trying to convey?

“Our song ‘Dancing in the Shadows’ was inspired by real-life events. Its dark melodic story focuses on the secrecy of a forbidden relationship. The lyrics also mirror how we feel as a band that has yet to be discovered by the masses. We pose the musical question: ‘How do we keep our love alive?'”

If you could perform with any music artist of all time who would that be and where would you like to play?

“If we could travel back in time, we’d love to perform with gay icons Divine & Sylvester at The Palladium nightclub in New York City circa 1985.”

Do you have any hobbies outside of music that help to inspire your work?

“Yes, Carly loves to garden and often says that it’s parallel to creating music. You plant your seeds and watch them grow. Some seedlings die out and don’t make it while others grow into a fruitful plant. Our music is like that. In our career, we’ve composed and released a lot of music. Some songs flower and blossom to their fullest potential while others don’t. Either way, we are spending time in the musical garden that we love.”

A Message from the Artist

“We offer a variety of ways that our fans can help to support the music we make. Outside of purchasing our tunes directly from us (via Bandcamp) we also sell compact discs, band t-shirts, and have a variety of other Candy Apple Blue merch available. Another great way for fans to help us is to share our music on their favorite social media platforms. I don’t think most people realize the power of a YouTube comment or a Spotify share.”
