LASSAI

Artist Bio

Lassai is a singer, songwriter, and actor born and raised in Chicago, IL’s South Shore neighborhood. They have been performing their whole life in any space available such as their school’s cafeteria, church choir, school plays, etc. It was Freshman year of High School when Lassai decided to commit themselves fully to performing. The first destination for Lassai was the theatre. That led them to study Musical Theatre at The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University. Post graduation, Lassai quickly began to immerse themselves in the Chicago Theatre community. All the while, performing throughout the year, Lassai was also recording music and studying voice, production, and audio engineering.

On March 31st, 2018, Lassai released their debut EP WATER + BIRTH, and from then on, a snowball formed with multiple releases, collaborations, and performances soon after.

In June 2018, Lassai collaborated with CONNER on the Play. Pause. Rewind EP. Lassai followed this release with their EP Discreet which was released in the fall of 2019 to critical acclaim. In the fall of 2020, Lassai released their 10 track mixtape Wonderland.

Upcoming ReLEASES

“My new single ‘CUNT’ will be released on June 31st, 2024.

What is the inspiration behind your Artist name?

Lassai (Luh-Say) is my actual last name. I grew up feeling weird about my name because people always mispronounced it and it is very obscure. However, now, I really love and appreciate how special it is. I thought it would be a beautiful way to venerate my ancestors by using the name to build an artistic legacy with.

STUDIO SETUP

I’m obsessed with drum machines/MPC –  I really love playing with different plug-ins/tape delays/reverb.

Can you please walk us through your creative process when making new tracks?

I’m an avid writer and I write in my journal quite often. When I’m writing music I love to build off of things that I have strong feelings about, that can cover day to day life experiences, love, relationships, etc. Early in my musical journey I would scour the Internet searching for unique beats, but now I’m happy to be in a place where I have a bunch of producer friends who are sending me cool beat packs or producing things specifically for me.”

“In terms of building the song, I always start with the melody, then fill it out with lyrics, and finally add background vocals and ad libs. Finally, I spend a good chunk of time exploring the mix, adjusting levels, and EQ-ing. I really love the mixing process of songwriting. I love how tedious it is.

Is there a particular environment or setting that inspires your best work for music creation? How do your surroundings influence your artistic output?

I typically work best in a cool, dark, and quiet environment. I prefer to be in solitude when I am writing and recording. On the flip side, I really love a good jam session as well.”

Since living in New York, I’ve been inspired to simply create more. I’m inspired by how deeply committed everyone here is to their craft, the hustle, and thriving in this market. I’m deeply influenced to show up and practice consistently so that I am prepared for any opportunities that come my way. Being in this environment has influenced my upcoming project, ABYSS which will be dropping in December of 2024. It’s dark and filled with an uptempo Club, Drum & Bass, and R&B fusion.

How has your personal sound and style evolved over the years?

I’ve had quite a few different musical phases. My early years were deeply rooted in R&B and Gospel. In my teen years I was infatuated with Musical Theater and Classical Music. In my early adult years I grew a passion for Hip-Hop/Dance/House music and have been dabbling in that sound ever since. I really love this experimental space that I’m in; it’s definitely liberating.

What innovative techniques or equipment do you use in your music production? How do these tools help you achieve your unique sound?

I’m very much a maximalist when it comes to producing vocals. I love a lot of stacks and harmonies. I love ad libs. I love poems and various soundbites. I love free form interludes. As far as equipment, my setup is very basic yet efficient with my Apollo audio interface, AKG C414 Microphone, and Logic.

What do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

I want people to feel as if they’ve escaped into a ‘Wonderland’ or ‘Abyss’! I want them to feel ecstasy, liberation, empowerment, a release. I want them to find healing and messages in the music like I do.”

Can you share a pivotal moment in your music career that significantly influenced your sound or direction?

“More than any one moment, I think my Mother’s taste in music really influenced my sound overall. She really kept TLC, Lauryn Hill, and GUY in constant rotation. It was a beautiful blend of R&B, Soul, Pop, and Hip Hop.”

“Being queer and a Chicago native really influenced my love for House, Juke, and Ghetto-tech sounds. Overall I’m mostly inspired by the human experience, specifically from a queer perspective. The fast routine of living in a big city that never sleeps (NYC). I’m deeply inspired by 90’s R&B, Gospel, and Dance/House.

Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or experiments you’re excited to share with your fans?

I’m super excited to drop my next single ‘CUNT’ later this month (6/30) in celebration of PRIDE. I’ll be dropping a single every month until the release of upcoming project ABYSS, so there’s a lot to stay peeled for. I also have some remixes and features dropping any day now that I’m super proud of.
