What are your thoughts on the current state of mainstream Hip Hop and its influence on the independent Hip Hop scene?

“I would best describe the state of current mainstream Hip Hop and its effect on underground Artists as an era of ‘growing pains’. The current state of Hip Hop has opened up its gates to include sounds, personas, and production that previously wouldn’t have most likely been widely accepted by Hip Hop audiences. Its the duality of having lots of diverse Artists but a lot of independent Artist who mimic those Artists, thus driving back down to creative originality of the genre as a whole. I feel this era of Hip Hop is needed and will be looked back at for decades to come but I like to think it’s going to eventually lead to a lot of timeless music once the wave pivots and the cream rises to the top again which will all happen in at time where Hip Hop Artists have more control over their art and finances.”

How do you feel the digital age and social media have most impacted the independent Music Artist, both positively and negatively?

“I would say the biggest clear positive attribute of the digital age of social media is the access to the potential of engaging millions of listeners from the palm of your hand. The age of passing out CDs to a few hundred people in your local town is over…now we can create a fan located all the way across the globe. The most negative aspect of social media to me is music becoming less about the actual product or sound and being more directed towards being great for content and viewers rather than listeners. This is a huge disadvantage to great Artists who don’t also have tons of other things going on, now you have to be more than just an Artist, now you have to be an idol style entertainer.”

How do you navigate the fine line between paying respect to your inspirations, staying true to a genre, and yet pushing the boundaries of your work to create something fresh and innovative?

“I believe this is a very fine line that all Artists have to draw for themselves amongst their own creativity. I think the best advice I could give is to not to think of these topics as guidelines or boundaries but as artistic suggestion. The truest way to push the boundaries of a genre or sound is to find what you best like and to bring who you are as a person into it because there is only one of you in the world. Emphasize what makes you who you are in your sound, and eventually over time it will grow to take on a life of its own.”
