Artist Bio

Underpond (aka Antti Toivanen) is a solo Artist from Lahti City, Finland. His music combines punchy beats, ethereal rhythms, and subsurface basses into a deeply reflective sound straight from the neon lit streets and hazy underground. All in all, the musical style is composed of tasty Synth-Pop, Synthwave, Electronica, Downtempo, and Breakbeat ingredients. This project was founded in 2020 though Antti has been composing electronic music in different genres with different Artist names and bands for almost 30 years.

“Lack of Time”

Underpond’s most recent single “Lack of Time” was released to major streaming services on September 30th, 2023, and is one of the tracks featured in Episode 2 of Mythic Rhythmic Presents.

Inspiration

“My music has been influenced by many electronic Artists such as Kavinsky, Daft Punk, The Midnight, Röyksopp, and all in all Synthwave and Synth-Pop styles. Memorable moments in life have also been sources of inspiration.”

Favorite Instruments/Studio Set-Up

“I am really enjoying the Diva soft synth lately as well as Arturia Pigments. I work with Logic Pro X in my home studio. One feature which I love to use is AI to produce voices for my tracks based on lyrics, pitch, and composed melody for the song.”

Challenges

“Because music composing is not my main job it is sometimes hard to find enough time to progress with tracks as much and fast I would like to. And of course it is always hard to get your music to heard to the people because so much great music is been published every day.”

Goals

“I released my first full length Album called Between Lost and Hope one year ago and my future goal is to release a second album as soon as I have enough new material for it. Can’t say when the time will be, but hopefully soon. Until then I am releasing singles, one track at time.”

“What role does technology play in your music, and how has it evolved over
your career?”

“One thing which I mentioned before is use of Artificial Intelligent to produce singer voice for my tracks based on lyrics, pitch and composed melody for it. It has given me opportunity and freedom to try different things easily with vocals and refine them as much I like. Of course the technology in all forms have been evolved so rapidly over the years and made composing electronic music so much easier with great quality. When I started my electronic music composing back in the mid of 90´s I used tracker programs for it, I think it was Impulse Tracker which I used a lot. Also releasing music is nowadays so much easier than back in the days.”

“How do you see your music evolving in the future, both creatively and professionally?”

“Moods and seasons often seem to have a fairly significant impact on my musical expression and the themes my songs address. So I can’t say much in advance about them, but conveying emotion and the right kind of emotion is always important. I believe that in the future I will give even more opportunities to experimentation and chance, and different collaboration projects may be possible. The desire to continually improve is strong.”

“What trends in electronic music do you think will be popular in 2024?”

“Artificial Intelligence has been in the spotlight for quite some time now, but I believe that its creative utilization will undoubtedly become more prominent and, in some cases, perhaps even go overboard. On the other hand, it will surely also provoke counter-forces, which is why I believe analog sounds and real synthesizers will rise to prominence in a more artisanal spirit. Authenticity and showcasing humanity in artists are likely to be the things that appeal to people more in the future than a perfectly polished surface.”

“What is the most important lesson you have learned in your journey as a music artist?”

“Have fun, try everything possible, and stay curious. Release your music boldly because often, excessive polishing of songs doesn’t usually make them better and may take away their original essence. Each new song takes your skills and expression to a new level.”
